Green Doors’s ”Training Cafés”

A “Training Café” is a work place that offers a vocational rehabilitation program. It differs from a sheltered workshop, the workers are in everyday contact with the public in a less artificial environment during the training process. Generally our Cafés offer training positions as bartenders, cooks, cleaners, etc. Occupational therapists and social workers support the clients during the training and guide the clients through solving various situations during the training process. The goal of the program is particularly to improve our client’s social and vocational skills, clarifying the rehabilitation goals of our clients and supporting their return to the open labour market. The duration of the program is in general one year.

Green Doors’ “Training Cafés” focus on the work with young people in the early stages of  psychotic disease (up to 35 years of age). For people with severe and long-term syptoms we offer sheltered positions such as cleaners of communal areas, etc.

The Green Doors Civic Association operates two “Training Cafés” and one "Training Restaurant", the support offered by each varies in environment and in the specific types of support provided:
  • „Café Na půli cesty (The Half Way Café)“ – provides intensive vocational training in an environment comparable with regular employment conditions in the open job market
  • “Klub V. Kolona“ – situated in the area of Pragues main psychiatric hospital – primarily supports hospitalized patients, helps patients to overcome their crises and promotes thein successful return to community
  • "Mlsná kavka (Picky Jackdaw)" - vegetarian restaurat in the city centre.

Is rehabilitation in our Cafés always successful?

The goal of the vocational rehabilitation program is to support people with severe mental illness in their effort to return to the open job market and to school. After completing our program in the “Training Café's”, on average 60-70% of clients integrate into the regular job market, independently or with our continued support. During the rehabilitation process clients also set their individual goals and thereby each step the client makes is a success which strengthens the clients self-esteem and everyday competence, enabling our patients to
live normal, rich and fulfilling lives again.

Schizophrenia or who can profit from the rehabilitation process?

Our programs are designed for people experiencing psychic illness. For those requiring rehabilitation, we offer vocational rehabilitation programs, social rehabilitation, vocational consulting, diagnostics, training and education.

From the medicalm point of view, the clients of the Green Doors Civic Association, belong to the category of patients with psychoses. The most well known illness from this area is schizophrenia. The common myth about this illness is that it represents 'split-personality' or 'multiple personality disorder'. In fact those who suffer from this illness do not hide two different personalities in themselves like the literary characters (or character) Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. On the  contrary, psychoses can be inconspicuous. People with psychoses can experience subtle inner states that are very difficult to share or define, and yet these states can profoundly disturb their social interactions and ability to function in every-day life.

Psychosis usually begins between the age of 15 and 30. It comes in the period when young people are full of expectations, hopes and dreams. The illness generally prevents the victims from fulfilling their potentials, de-railing their social development, and stops them from gaining their first work experiences. Early intervention can fundamentally moderate the process of the illness and dramatically improve the quality of life. Therefore we specialize in the support of people in the early stages of the illness (so called „early psychosis“), the period when clients still have a high chance returning to a normal life.

We invite you to visit our cafés for a cup of delicious coffee, concerts, exhibitions, theatre performances and many other events. Our cafés have a cozy, home-like atmosphere, where you can meet nice people and enjoy favourable prices and opening hours. Just by visiting you can also support our activities. Thank you.
